Principles

What the terms are being written to do

  1. Be readable in one sitting

    Short sentences and common words. No clause a parent needs a lawyer to decode.

  2. Treat both parents the same

    One set of terms. The same rights, the same limits, the same words for each parent.

  3. Be fair to the person using SIGIL

    Written to balance what each side carries, not only to protect SIGIL.

  4. No surprises

    Any change to the terms is explained in plain language before it applies.

  5. Your record is yours to take

    Each parent can export their record, with what it needs to check itself.

  6. State the limits plainly

    SIGIL is not a court and does not decide whether anything violates an order. It doesn't give legal advice. Screening is automated and can be wrong, and you remain responsible for what you send.

Still to be settled

Specific terms, such as where disputes are heard, time limits for claims and how changes are made, will be set out in the final text once counsel has reviewed them. They'll be published here for comment before launch.
